the untangle timer: resfeber
Prompted with the word resfeber, Swedish for the mixed feeling of anxiety and anticipation before the start of a journey, I was asked to create an art piece in response to this word. I was inspired by the tangled mixed of emotions that resfeber invokes. Personally, I tend to let my fears outweigh the excitement of starting something new. The Untangle Timer is a reminder to myself that even though the future might seem uncertain, everything will work out in the end.
Concept Generation
I explored a series of interwoven rings and forms before setting on the idea of winding string. I wanted to create an interactive piece that prompted the audience to feel a little bit of resfeber in their interaction with it but ultimately ease the worry and calming and soothing the user by the end of the interaction.
Final Design
My final design consists of a laser cut birch wood frame that holds a floating timer face. A digital panel on the side allows the user to set the timer. The user then winds the string around the pegs, creating a tangled mess. Starting the timer pulls the string through to create a smooth circle.
