This project was part of Intersect CPG at Northwestern University.
January - March 2019
Over the course of 10 weeks, I worked as the sole designer on a team of business, marketing & communications students to design a disruptive external period protection product, brand & business model.
We conducted in-home interviews with 8 users to understand both the technical and emotional requirements of period protection. We developed low-fidelity prototypes and tested them with 12 women.
This project challenged me in two aspects. The first was that menstruation is an extremely stigmatized & personal topic that’s almost impossible to test in-context, so we had to be intentional in our interviews to encourage the user to relax and open up and find alternative methods for testing like applying products to their arms or over their pants. The second was that I had to facilitate design thinking in a team of non-designers. This meant a lot of extra time on my end finding materials and resources that could communicate and give examples for the value design could bring.
Project details are under NDA.
